Reboot your computer system and check whether the system is detecting your WD My Passport hard drive. Expand it and select Show hidden devices. In the Device Manager window, navigate to the View tab. I am an average user with average technical skills, and this one has me stumped. Type devmgmt.msc in the Search bar and hit Enter. It could be that I got suckered on buying a defective drive, but a quick check on Google shows this is a very common problem with WD external drives and there are hundreds of suggested fixes. The download is compressed, so create a folder, and then un-compress the new files there.
Ensure the WD Passport drive is connected to the back of your computer, not a USB 3.0 port, but a backward compatible USB port with the same cable that came with the drive. Unplug all USB devices except mouse, keyboard and My Passport drive.

I tried that several more times with the same result. Go to Western Digital and download the update file. I tried downloading a driver from WD, but it will not install. I saw an earlier response that involves modifying the registry, but I am very hesitant to do that because of past registry problems on a different PC. I am running XP with SP3 on an older Dell Latitude D620. The drive does not show in the device manager or through My Computer. There is no USB device acknowledgement of new device found. OS is Yosemite 10.10.5, and the device turns on when plugged into USB, but does not show up in finder or even disk utility. The light comes on and there are soft noises from within, but when I connect to my laptop, the drive is not recognized. My WD My Passport (older) is not recognized anymore on my Macbook. This caused an issue as I needed windows 10 to recog. I have a WD 1TB external hard drive, supposed new without documentation. In shooting another video for Call That Geek, I found that my WD Passport not recognized in the system.
